What an insert replacement keeps
An insert unit is installed within the existing window frame after the operating portions of the old window are removed. The surrounding frame, much of the trim, and exterior integration remain. This can reduce disturbance and preserve finished materials.
The tradeoff is that the existing frame must be sound and suitable. The new unit also occupies space inside the old frame, which can reduce visible glass area. Insert installation does not expose every condition behind the frame, so the pre-work assessment matters.

What full-frame replacement exposes
Full-frame replacement removes the existing window and frame to reach the rough opening. That creates access to inspect sill and framing conditions, reset the unit, and integrate flashing, drainage, insulation, air sealing, and trim with the actual opening.
The broader access can be valuable when the frame is deteriorated, water is suspected, geometry is poor, or the project is already changing surrounding finishes. It also creates more labor, material, finish, and disruption than a typical insert.

Frame and water history should lead the decision
Look for softness, staining, peeling, corrosion, recurring condensation at the perimeter, cracked sealant, displaced trim, and evidence of water below the opening. A dry visible surface does not prove the concealed sill is sound, but a known water history is a reason to investigate before choosing the least disruptive method.
DOE building-science guidance emphasizes properly lapped flashing and a drainage path around window and door openings. The exact detail depends on wall and product conditions, and manufacturer instructions and project documents control the specific installation.
Compare ratings without confusing them with installation
The NFRC label supports whole-product comparisons. U-factor describes heat transfer through the product; lower values indicate better resistance to heat flow. Solar heat gain coefficient describes how much solar heat enters; visible transmittance relates to daylight. ENERGY STAR criteria vary by product and climate zone.
A strong rating does not correct a poorly prepared opening. Likewise, careful installation cannot change the certified product rating. A sound decision considers the tested product and the way it will be integrated with the wall.

Questions to ask in the estimate
Ask what remains, what is removed, how the existing frame condition was evaluated, how the new unit will be flashed and air-sealed for the wall type, what happens to interior and exterior trim, whether glass area changes, how hidden damage is handled, and which product labels or permit documents must remain available.
The answer should describe the actual opening. A method name by itself is not a complete scope.
